Joseph M. Juran
Joseph M. Juran was a Romanian-born American engineer whose 1951 Quality Control Handbook and teaching in Japan made quality a management discipline, and who popularized the Pareto principle of the vital few.
What they did and why it matters
Juran taught that most problems come from a small number of causes, which is why good operators sort errors and costs by cause before trying to fix them. He generalized Vilfredo Pareto's observation into the 'vital few and useful many', published the Quality Control Handbook in 1951, and lectured in Japan from 1954 on managing for quality. In fulfillment, a Pareto chart of mis-picks or damage claims usually shows a few SKUs, locations, or carriers driving most of the problem. ABC analysis of inventory applies the same logic to sales volume and slotting.
