Kaoru Ishikawa
Kaoru Ishikawa was a Japanese chemist and quality expert who created the cause-and-effect or fishbone diagram and helped build Japan's quality circle movement.
What they did and why it matters
Ishikawa gave frontline teams a simple tool for finding the root cause of a recurring problem, and his fishbone diagram is still used in warehouse problem-solving sessions. The diagram sorts possible causes into categories such as people, methods, machines, materials, and measurement, so a team looks beyond the obvious answer. He also promoted quality circles, small groups of workers who meet to improve their own processes. When a fulfillment team investigates why a carrier's damage rate jumped or why one shift ships late, a fishbone diagram helps separate packaging, handling, and system causes.
