Vilfredo Pareto

Vilfredo Pareto was an Italian economist and sociologist who observed that about 80 percent of land in Italy was owned by about 20 percent of the population, the basis of the Pareto principle.

What they did and why it matters

Pareto's observation that a small share of causes accounts for most of the effect is one of the most used rules of thumb in inventory and warehouse management. Joseph Juran later generalized his finding about land and wealth into the 80/20 principle. In fulfillment, a small share of SKUs typically drives most units shipped, which is the basis of ABC analysis, golden-zone slotting, and cycle count frequency. The split is rarely exactly 80/20, so operators should measure their own distribution, but the pattern explains why focusing on fast movers pays off.
