Bill Smith
Bill Smith was an American engineer at Motorola who introduced the Six Sigma quality method in 1986 to standardize how defects are measured and reduced.
What they did and why it matters
Smith's Six Sigma gave companies a common, numeric way to measure defects, and its methods are still used to improve accuracy in warehouses and distribution. Six Sigma targets processes so consistent that defects occur only a few times per million opportunities, and it uses a structured define, measure, analyze, improve, and control approach. Motorola and later General Electric made it widely known. Fulfillment teams measuring errors per million units shipped or running projects to cut damage and mis-picks are using his framework.
