William G. Pagonis
William G. Pagonis is a retired US Army lieutenant general who led the 22nd Support Command in the 1991 Gulf War, moving about 500,000 troops and 7 million tons of supplies.
What they did and why it matters
Pagonis ran one of the largest logistics operations in modern history and later described it in business terms, which made military logistics lessons accessible to corporate supply chain leaders. His command received, staged, and moved troops, vehicles, fuel, and supplies into Saudi Arabia on a tight timeline, relying on clear priorities, decentralized execution, and constant communication. His 1992 book Moving Mountains became a widely read leadership text. Peak season planning in a fulfillment network, with surge staffing and staging, draws on the same principles of preparation and flexibility.
