George C. Thorpe
George C. Thorpe was a US Marine Corps officer who wrote Pure Logistics: The Science of War Preparation in 1917, one of the first books to treat logistics as its own discipline.
What they did and why it matters
Thorpe helped define logistics as a distinct field of planning, which is how the word entered American management vocabulary. Writing at the Naval War College at a time when the term was little used in the US, he argued that the work of supplying, moving, and sustaining forces deserved the same study as strategy and tactics. Business later borrowed the word for physical distribution and supply chain work. When fulfillment teams talk about logistics, they use a term whose modern meaning Thorpe helped establish.
