James P. Womack
James P. Womack is an American researcher who led MIT's International Motor Vehicle Program, co-wrote The Machine That Changed the World in 1990, and founded the Lean Enterprise Institute in 1997.
What they did and why it matters
Womack brought Toyota's methods to Western managers under the name lean, which is how most warehouses today learned about waste reduction, flow, and continuous improvement. His MIT team's study of global car factories coined 'lean production', and the follow-up book Lean Thinking, written with Daniel Jones in 1996, set out principles such as value streams, flow, and pull that apply beyond factories. Lean warehousing programs that map the path of an order, remove unnecessary touches, and level workloads across shifts draw directly on the vocabulary he popularized.
