Marc Raibert
Marc Raibert is an American roboticist who founded the Leg Laboratory at Carnegie Mellon and in 1992 founded Boston Dynamics, which later built the Stretch robot for unloading trucks.
What they did and why it matters
Raibert's company turned research on dynamic, balancing robots into a commercial product for one of the hardest warehouse tasks: unloading floor-loaded trucks and containers. Boston Dynamics spent decades on legged robots before launching Stretch in 2021, a mobile robot with a vacuum gripper arm built to move boxes from trailers to conveyors. Floor-loaded containers are common for imported goods, and unloading them by hand is slow and physically demanding. Brands receiving floor-loaded freight at a 3PL may see robots like Stretch handling the work.
