Jack Ma
Jack Ma is a Chinese entrepreneur and former English teacher who co-founded Alibaba in Hangzhou in 1999 and launched the Taobao consumer marketplace in 2003.
What they did and why it matters
Ma built the platforms that connect Chinese manufacturers with buyers worldwide, which shapes where many US brands source products and how cross-border parcels flow. Alibaba.com began as a business-to-business site linking Chinese suppliers with overseas buyers, and Taobao and Tmall grew into China's largest consumer marketplaces. Alibaba also turned Singles' Day on November 11 into the world's largest shopping event and created the Cainiao logistics network. Brands sourcing from China, negotiating minimum order quantities with factories, or planning around Chinese peak seasons are working inside the ecosystem Ma helped create.
