David Simchi-Levi
David Simchi-Levi is an MIT professor of engineering systems who co-wrote Designing and Managing the Supply Chain, first published in 1999, and works on supply chain analytics and risk.
What they did and why it matters
Simchi-Levi's work turned supply chain design into a set of quantitative models that companies use to place inventory and plan networks. His textbook covers network design, inventory pooling, and the value of information, and his research has measured supplier risk by how long a company could keep operating if a supplier failed. These ideas inform decisions such as how many fulfillment centers a brand needs and how much safety stock to hold at each. Network modeling tools used in 3PL sales and brand planning rely on methods his work helped popularize.
