Singles' Day
Singles' Day is an annual November 11 online shopping festival that Alibaba's Taobao Mall, now Tmall, started in 2009 and that grew into one of the largest single shopping events in the world.
What happened and why it matters
Singles' Day showed that one promotional date could create a peak bigger than a normal holiday season, and fulfillment networks now plan for event-driven spikes like it. The first November 11 sale in 2009 brought in roughly 52 million yuan; by 2019, sales during the event passed 268 billion yuan. Handling that volume pushed Chinese logistics companies to position inventory near buyers, add temporary labor, and automate sortation. US operators follow the same playbook around Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Prime Day: forecast early, reserve carrier capacity in advance, and agree peak surcharges and cutoff times before the rush.
