A.P. Møller
A.P. Møller was a Danish shipowner who co-founded a steamship company in Svendborg with his father in 1904 and founded a second line in 1912, the foundations of today's A.P. Moller - Maersk.
What they did and why it matters
Møller built the company that grew into one of the world's largest container carriers, so many brands' imports still travel under his family's name. He founded Steamship Company Svendborg in 1904 and Dampskibsselskabet af 1912, expanding into liner services between continents. His son Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller later moved the group into container shipping. When a brand books ocean freight, compares carrier alliances, or tracks a container on a Maersk vessel, it is dealing with the business he started more than a century ago.
