Samuel Cunard
Samuel Cunard was a Canadian-born shipowner who founded the first regular transatlantic steamship line, starting mail service from Liverpool to Halifax and Boston with the Britannia in July 1840.
What they did and why it matters
Cunard introduced scheduled steamship service across the Atlantic, replacing the uncertainty of sailing ships with departures on fixed dates. Backed by a British mail contract, his company ran steamships on a regular timetable between Liverpool, Halifax, and Boston. Reliable schedules let merchants plan shipments and inventory around known transit times. Today's liner shipping, where carriers publish weekly sailings and schedule reliability is tracked closely by importers, is the same model applied to container ships.
