Maersk Acquires Sea-Land
Maersk Acquires Sea-Land refers to A.P. Moller-Maersk's $800 million purchase of the international container shipping business of Sea-Land Service from CSX, announced in July 1999 and completed that December, creating Maersk Sealand.
What happened and why it matters
The deal joined the line that pioneered container shipping with the Danish group that became its largest operator, and it marked an early step in the consolidation that left a handful of carriers controlling most container capacity. Maersk took about 70 ships, some 200,000 containers and related terminals, while CSX kept Sea-Land's domestic services to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Guam. The combined Maersk Sealand became the world's leading container line. For importers, consolidation means fewer carriers and alliances setting capacity and rates on major lanes, which matters when negotiating contract rates or finding space in peak season.
