Sea-Land Transatlantic Container Service

Sea-Land Transatlantic Container Service began in spring 1966, when the SS Fairland carried 226 containers from the U.S. East Coast to Rotterdam, arriving on May 3 and opening regular container trade between North America and Europe.

1966 North Atlantic: New Jersey to Rotterdam, Bremen and Grangemouth

What happened and why it matters

The Fairland voyage brought containerization to the North Atlantic and pushed European ports, railways and truckers to adopt the box. Sea-Land's weekly service linked Port Elizabeth and Baltimore with Rotterdam, Bremen and Grangemouth in Scotland, which handled the first container call in the United Kingdom on May 7, 1966. Within a few years European shipping lines formed consortia and ordered their own container ships. For importers today, the result is the standard ocean booking: a full container load moved door to door under one bill of lading, through ports on both sides of the ocean equipped to handle the same box.
