Emma Maersk
Emma Maersk was a container ship delivered by Odense Steel Shipyard in 2006 that became the largest container vessel in the world and opened the era of ultra-large container ships.
What happened and why it matters
Emma Maersk showed that bigger ships could cut the cost of moving each container across the ocean, a logic that still shapes ocean freight rates and port planning. Maersk officially rated her at about 11,000 TEU, though industry experts estimated she could carry several thousand more, and no container ship in service was larger when she was delivered in 2006. Rival carriers soon ordered similar ships, which pushed ports to deepen berths and buy taller cranes. For shippers, the result was lower slot costs on major east-west lanes but fewer, larger sailings, so one delayed vessel now affects far more containers and inventory plans.
