In-Transit Inventory

In-transit inventory is stock that has left a supplier or another warehouse but has not yet been received at its destination, whether on the ocean, in a truck, or moving between fulfillment centers.

Topic: Inventory Planning Entry INV-139

Why it matters for ecommerce brands

In-transit stock is often already paid for and may count on your balance sheet depending on Incoterms. Planning should include it in inventory position so you do not reorder units already on the way.

Common questions

Who owns inventory while it is in transit?
Ownership usually follows the agreed shipping terms. Under terms like FOB origin or EXW the buyer generally owns goods once they leave the supplier, while under DDP the seller carries the risk until delivery.
