Sam Walton

Sam Walton was an American retailer who opened the first Walmart in Rogers, Arkansas, in 1962 and built it into the largest retail chain in the United States by 1990.

What they did and why it matters

Walton showed that a retailer can win on logistics as much as on merchandising, and the distribution model he backed still sets the standard suppliers must meet. Walmart placed stores within reach of its own distribution centers, used cross-docking to move goods from inbound to outbound trucks with little storage, and invested early in data sharing with suppliers, later through Retail Link. Brands that sell to Walmart today work under its routing guides, on-time-in-full targets, and chargebacks, all of which trace back to the low-cost, high-velocity supply chain Walton prioritized.
