Sol Price
Sol Price was an American retailer who founded the FedMart discount chain in 1954 and opened the first Price Club warehouse store in San Diego in 1976, creating the warehouse club format.
What they did and why it matters
Price showed that selling a limited assortment in bulk straight from warehouse racking can cut retail costs dramatically, a model that now shapes how many brands sell through club channels. Price Club stocked a narrow range of items on pallets in a no-frills building, charged a membership fee, and kept margins low. Price Club merged with Costco in 1993. Brands supplying warehouse clubs ship full pallets built to strict specifications, with large case packs and club-specific packaging, which is a very different fulfillment profile from direct-to-consumer orders.
