Masahiro Hara
Masahiro Hara is a Japanese engineer who led development of the QR code at Denso, in the unit that is now Denso Wave, released in 1994 to track automotive parts, and later made freely available without license fees.
What they did and why it matters
Hara's QR code gave operations a two-dimensional symbol that holds far more data than a linear barcode and can be read from any angle, which is why it now appears on shipping labels, returns, and warehouse locations. It was designed to track components in Toyota group factories, and Denso Wave chose not to charge royalties for its use, which helped it spread worldwide. In fulfillment, QR codes print on box-free return confirmations, link packing slips to tracking pages, and label totes and bins. They also let phone cameras act as scanners, which lowers hardware cost for small operations.
