Jakob Hatteland
Jakob Hatteland is a Norwegian entrepreneur who co-founded AutoStore with Ingvar Hognaland in Vats, Norway, and commercialized its cube storage system, in which robots on a grid retrieve stacked bins.
What they did and why it matters
Hatteland turned a compact storage idea into a widely installed warehouse automation system, bringing goods-to-person picking within reach of mid-sized operations. After building an electronics components distribution business, he backed his technical director Ingvar Hognaland's design: bins stacked directly on each other inside a grid, with robots on top that dig out bins and deliver them to picking ports. The company dates its founding to 1996, and Hatteland decided to sell the system commercially in 2004. Fulfillment operators adding AutoStore to existing buildings gain dense storage and faster each picking without building a new high-bay warehouse.
