Larry Hillblom

Larry Hillblom was an American businessman who co-founded DHL in 1969 with Adrian Dalsey and Robert Lynn, starting by carrying shipping documents by air between San Francisco and Honolulu.

1943–1995 Co-founder of DHL

What they did and why it matters

Hillblom helped create international air express, the service that lets documents and parcels cross borders in days, and DHL remains a major option for cross-border e-commerce. DHL began by flying bills of lading to Honolulu ahead of ships so cargo could clear customs before arrival, cutting port waiting time. The company expanded across Asia and then worldwide. Brands shipping direct to international customers today often use DHL Express for speed and its customs brokerage, the same combination of air transport and paperwork handling the founders started with.
