Jacques Saadé
Jacques Saadé was a Lebanese-French shipping executive who founded CMA in Marseille in 1978 with one ship and built CMA CGM into the world's third largest container carrier by 2006.
What they did and why it matters
Saadé grew a single-ship operation into one of the largest container lines through acquisitions, part of the consolidation that left a handful of carriers controlling global ocean freight. CMA acquired the French state line CGM in the 1990s and later other carriers, including APL. Fewer, larger carriers means alliances and capacity decisions by a few companies now drive ocean rates and service. Brands negotiating ocean contracts, or watching rate swings during disruptions, operate in a market his company helped concentrate.
