Gianluigi Aponte
Gianluigi Aponte is an Italian shipping entrepreneur who founded Mediterranean Shipping Company with his wife Rafaela in 1970 and built it into the world's largest container line.
What they did and why it matters
Aponte's MSC passed Maersk in 2022 to become the largest container carrier by capacity, so its decisions on routes, ships, and pricing now affect a large share of US imports. MSC grew through steady fleet expansion, much of it with very large ships, and has also bought ports, logistics, and rail businesses. It left the 2M alliance with Maersk and runs most of its network on its own. Brands booking ocean freight see MSC as a major option on most Asia to US lanes, and its scale influences market rates.
