Keith Tantlinger

Keith Tantlinger was an American mechanical engineer who, working with Malcom McLean, designed the corner castings and twist-lock that let containers be lifted, stacked, and locked together.

1919–2011 Engineer of the shipping container system

What they did and why it matters

Tantlinger designed the hardware that makes every standard container interchangeable, the reason a box can move from ship to crane to truck chassis to rail car without repacking. His corner fittings and twist-lock let containers be lifted by spreaders and secured to each other and to chassis. He persuaded McLean to release the patents royalty-free, and the design became the basis of international standards. When a brand books a 40-foot container or a drayage carrier picks up a box at a port, the equipment works because of the standards he enabled.
