Yellow Corporation Bankruptcy
The Yellow Corporation Bankruptcy was the 2023 collapse of Yellow, then the third-largest US less-than-truckload carrier, which stopped operating at the end of July and filed for Chapter 11 on August 6, 2023.
What happened and why it matters
Yellow's collapse removed a major LTL carrier almost overnight and showed shippers why carrier diversification and financial checks matter. The nearly 100-year-old company had about 30,000 employees, including 22,000 Teamsters, and carried about $1.5 billion in long-term debt as LTL shipments fell. It ceased operations at the end of July 2023 and filed for bankruptcy on August 6, the largest trucking bankruptcy on record. Its freight moved quickly to other LTL carriers, which gained pricing power as capacity tightened. Shippers with LTL volume now keep backup carriers in their routing guides.
