Freight Class
Freight Class is a National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) rating from 50 to 500 that LTL carriers use to price shipments based on density, handling, stowability, and liability.
Why it matters for ecommerce brands
Lower density usually means a higher class and a higher price. NMFC Docket 2025-1 (effective July 19, 2025) moved most commodities to a 13-tier density scale and added classes 50 and 55 to it, so recheck the class and density on your bills of lading.
Common questions
- How is LTL freight class determined now?
- Since NMFC Docket 2025-1 took effect on July 19, 2025, most commodities are classed by density on a 13-tier scale, with some items still classed by specific NMFC rules. Measure and weigh each pallet accurately and confirm the NMFC item number with your carrier or TMS.
