Michael Dell
Michael Dell is an American businessman who started PC's Limited from his University of Texas dorm room in 1984 and built Dell around selling direct to customers and building computers to order.
What they did and why it matters
Dell showed that building to order after the customer pays can sharply cut inventory, an approach that still informs kitting, configure-to-order, and print-on-demand fulfillment. Customers ordered by phone and later online, and Dell assembled each computer from components, so it held little finished goods inventory and collected cash before paying many suppliers. The model depended on fast, reliable component supply and tight coordination with logistics partners. Brands that assemble bundles or personalize products at the fulfillment center face the same trade-off between lower inventory and longer, more complex order processing.
