Eliyahu Goldratt
Eliyahu Goldratt was an Israeli physicist and management thinker who created the Theory of Constraints, popularized in his 1984 business novel The Goal.
What they did and why it matters
Goldratt's central point, that a system's output is set by its single tightest constraint, is how experienced operators find capacity in a busy warehouse. The Theory of Constraints tells managers to identify the bottleneck, exploit it, subordinate everything else to it, elevate it, and then repeat as the constraint moves. In fulfillment the bottleneck might be pack stations, the sorter, dock doors, or a carrier pickup window during peak season. Adding pickers does not raise throughput if packing is the limit, which is why automation business cases should start by locating the constraint.
