John J. Bartholdi III

John J. Bartholdi III was an American industrial engineer at Georgia Tech who developed bucket brigade order picking and co-wrote Warehouse & Distribution Science, a free textbook on warehouse design.

What they did and why it matters

Bartholdi showed that warehouse work can be organized with simple rules that balance themselves, an idea still used to raise pick rates without new equipment. In bucket brigades, developed with Donald Eisenstein, each picker works an order forward until a downstream colleague takes it over, then walks back for more, so faster workers naturally do more; a 1996 study reported pick rates more than 30 percent higher at a major retailer. He held the Manhattan Associates/Dabbiere Chair at Georgia Tech and, with Steven Hackman, gave away a widely used warehousing textbook. Operators who slot fast movers, size forward pick areas, and balance pick zones use methods he taught.
