ISO 3691-4
ISO 3691-4 is the international standard, first published in 2020 and revised in 2023, that sets safety requirements and verification methods for driverless industrial trucks such as AGVs and AMRs and the systems they operate in.
What it requires
Manufacturers must design driverless trucks with safety functions such as personnel detection, speed control and safe braking, emergency stops, warning signals and defined operating zones, and verify them. Users and integrators must define the operating environment, mark hazard zones, and keep the site matching the conditions the system was designed for. It is voluntary, but Europe adopts it as EN ISO 3691-4 to show machinery law conformity, and in the US it is sold in a package with R15.08-1 and B56.5.
Why it matters
ISO 3691-4 is the safety benchmark buyers, insurers and regulators use when a warehouse deploys mobile robots. Compliance depends not only on the robot but on how the site is laid out and kept, so changes such as new racking, narrower aisles or mixed foot traffic can take a deployment out of its validated conditions. For example, a 3PL adding AMRs for goods-to-person picking should require the vendor's ISO 3691-4 conformity documents and re-run the site risk assessment when it moves pick stations or opens a new zone.
