ANSI/ITSDF B56.5

ANSI/ITSDF B56.5 is the American National Standard safety standard for driverless, automatic guided industrial vehicles and automated functions of manned industrial vehicles, first published in 1978 and now in its 2024 edition.

1978, current edition 2024 Other United States ANSI/ITSDF B56.5-2024

What it requires

Manufacturers must build guided vehicles with safety features such as object detection, emergency stops, warning devices and safe braking. Users must mark operating areas, train personnel, keep the operating environment as specified and maintain vehicles. The standard also covers manned trucks converted to automated operation. It is voluntary, but it is sold as a safety package together with ISO 3691-4 and ANSI/A3 R15.08-1, and OSHA can treat it as evidence of recognized practice.

Why it matters

B56.5 is the US standard most vendors cite for automated forklifts and tuggers, so it is the baseline for buying and deploying them. It assigns duties to the user, such as keeping aisles and floors within the vehicle's design limits, which ties automation safety to everyday housekeeping. For example, a distribution center running automated pallet movers must keep detection zones clear and retrain staff after adding a new crossing, because a vehicle that is safe in its validated layout may not be in a changed one.
