ANSI/RIA R15.08
ANSI/RIA R15.08 is the American National Standard for industrial mobile robot safety, with Part 1 published in 2020 for robot design and Part 2 in 2023 for system integration and use, now issued by A3.
What it requires
Part 1 sets safety requirements for manufacturers of industrial mobile robots, including mobile platforms that carry manipulators, covering detection, speed limits, stopping and warnings. Part 2 tells integrators and users how to assess risk, configure fleets, define zones and integrate robots into a site safely. The standard is voluntary, but OSHA can use consensus standards as evidence of recognized hazards and feasible fixes, and buyers and insurers commonly require conformance in contracts.
Why it matters
R15.08 is the US reference for deploying mobile robots in warehouses safely, especially where robots share space with people. Part 2 places duties on the integrator and the user, so a 3PL cannot rely on the robot maker alone. For example, a fulfillment center adding autonomous carts that travel through manual picking aisles should run the Part 2 risk assessment, document speed and separation settings for shared zones, and repeat it after layout changes, which helps if OSHA later investigates an incident.
