Peak Surcharge
A peak surcharge is a temporary fee carriers charge during high-volume periods, mainly from October through January.
Why it matters for ecommerce brands
Peak surcharges raise holiday shipping costs right when your volume is highest, so they belong in Q4 pricing and free shipping thresholds. For the 2026 season, UPS demand surcharges run from September 27 to January 16, USPS applies temporary price increases from October 4 to January 17, and FedEx residential ground fees were reported at $0.80 per package from November 23 to December 27. For example, 40,000 FedEx Home Delivery packages in that window add $32,000. Large shippers above their baseline volume can pay much more.
Origin
UPS announced its first holiday peak surcharges in June 2017 for residential deliveries that season, and peak fees spread across carriers and shippers during the 2020 COVID-19 e-commerce surge.
Common questions
- When do carrier peak surcharges apply?
- Carriers usually apply peak surcharges during the holiday season, from late September or October through mid-January, and sometimes at other high-demand times. Dates and amounts are announced each year and can depend on your volume.
- How much is the FedEx peak surcharge in 2026?
- FedEx's residential demand surcharge for Ground and Home Delivery was reported at $0.50 per package from October 26, rising to $0.80 from November 23 to December 27, then $0.50 until January 17, 2027. Oversize, additional handling, and high-volume shippers pay more.
- Does USPS have peak season surcharges?
- Yes. USPS calls it a temporary price change, and for 2026 it applies to Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select from October 4, 2026, to January 17, 2027. Increases are larger for heavier packages going farther.
