Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal
Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal gained its Elizabeth section on August 15, 1962, when the Port of New York Authority, today the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, opened what is often called the world's first container port.
What happened and why it matters
Elizabeth showed that container shipping needed a new kind of port: large paved yards, rail and highway links, and berths for container cranes, rather than narrow piers built for loose cargo. Malcom McLean's Sea-Land was its anchor user, and the site sits next to Port Newark, where the Ideal X sailed in 1956. Together they form the main container complex of the Port of New York and New Jersey, the busiest container gateway on the U.S. East Coast. Brands importing into the Northeast still pay drayage, chassis and demurrage costs shaped by how this complex handles congestion and free time.
