NMFC Density-Based Classification Overhaul
The NMFC Density-Based Classification Overhaul is a set of changes to the National Motor Freight Classification, effective July 19, 2025, that moved most LTL freight to classes based on density instead of commodity type.
What happened and why it matters
The 2025 NMFC overhaul made accurate dimensions the main driver of LTL freight class, so measuring every pallet now directly affects shipping costs. Under Docket 2025-1, adopted by the NMFTA and effective July 19, 2025, many commodity-specific listings were consolidated into density-based classes, and the standard density scale expanded from 11 to 13 tiers. Items with special handling or liability concerns kept separate treatment. A pallet that is lighter for its size can land in a higher class and cost more. Shippers should measure pallets precisely, update item master data, and expect more reclassification if dimensions on the bill of lading are wrong.
