Maersk Triple E Class
The Maersk Triple E Class is a series of container ships built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering for Maersk Line, starting with Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller delivered in 2013, each rated at about 18,000 TEU.
What happened and why it matters
The Triple E class pushed ship size to about 18,000 TEU and showed carriers competing on cost per container and fuel use, a contest that still shapes freight rates on major lanes. The first ship, Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller, was delivered at Okpo, South Korea, on July 2, 2013, the first of 20 ordered; the name stands for economy of scale, energy efficiency, and environmental improvement. Each ship carried about 16% more containers than Emma Maersk. Larger ships lower slot costs, but they unload huge batches at once, which strains terminals, drayage, and inland warehouses whenever one arrives.
