Launch of Amazon Air
Launch of Amazon Air refers to Amazon's 2016 start of a dedicated cargo airline using leased Boeing 767 freighters flown by partners Atlas Air and ATSG, with its first branded plane unveiled in Seattle that August.
What happened and why it matters
Amazon Air gave Amazon control over the air capacity behind its fast delivery promises, reducing its dependence on UPS and FedEx. In March and May 2016, Amazon agreed to lease 20 Boeing 767 freighters each from Air Transport Services Group and Atlas Air, and on August 5, 2016, it showed its first branded plane, Amazon One, at Seattle's Seafair air show, when 11 dedicated aircraft were already flying. The network moves inventory between fulfillment centers and toward customers overnight. For sellers using FBA, it is part of why Amazon can offer fast delivery over long distances without placing stock everywhere.
