eBay Launch
eBay Launch took place on September 3, 1995, when Pierre Omidyar started AuctionWeb as a side project from his home in San Jose, California; the site's first sale was a broken laser pointer, and it was renamed eBay in 1997.
What happened and why it matters
eBay showed that a website could connect millions of individual sellers with buyers, the marketplace model that Amazon, Etsy and others later expanded. Because eBay never held inventory, every seller packed and shipped its own orders, which built a huge base of small shippers and created demand for online postage and label printing tools. eBay's feedback ratings also made shipping speed and item condition part of a seller's public reputation. Marketplace sellers today face the same pressures, with handling time, tracking uploads and delivery performance affecting search ranking and buyer trust.
