What happened and why it matters

Amazon's rise past UPS confirmed that the largest online retailer is also one of the largest carriers, which shapes the rates and options available to every other shipper. According to internal Amazon data reported by the Wall Street Journal, Amazon delivered more packages to US homes than UPS in 2022, after passing FedEx in 2020. Pitney Bowes' parcel index, which counts differently, showed Amazon ahead of UPS in 2023 with 5.9 billion parcels, while USPS still led at 6.6 billion. For brands, Amazon delivery mostly serves its own marketplace and FBA orders, so UPS, FedEx, USPS, and regional carriers compete for everything else.
