Void Fill
Void Fill is packing material such as kraft paper, air pillows, or packing peanuts used to fill empty space in a shipping box so items do not shift or break in transit; also called dunnage.
Why it matters for ecommerce brands
Void fill adds material and labor cost to every order, and a box that needs a lot of it is usually too big, which can raise dimensional weight charges. Many customers also judge a brand's sustainability by its void fill.
Common questions
- Is dunnage the same as void fill?
- In ecommerce the terms are used almost interchangeably for material that fills space and protects items in a box. In freight, dunnage can also mean bracing, airbags, or lumber used to secure loads inside a trailer or container.
