Ruben Rausing
Ruben Rausing was a Swedish industrialist who founded Tetra Pak in Lund in 1951, commercializing a tetrahedron-shaped, plastic-coated paper carton for milk and other liquid foods.
What they did and why it matters
Rausing showed how packaging design can lower the cost of storing and distributing a product, a lesson that applies directly to e-commerce cartons and dimensional weight. Tetra Pak's paper-based cartons were light, used little material, and later, in brick form, packed tightly on pallets and shelves with almost no wasted space. Aseptic versions let milk travel and store without refrigeration. Brands rethinking packaging today to reduce void space, damage, and shipping cost per unit face the same trade-offs between material, protection, and cube that Tetra Pak built a business on.
