Ken Thomas

Ken Thomas was an Australian businessman who started a one-truck haulage business in Sydney in 1946 that became Thomas Nationwide Transport (TNT), a major road, rail, sea, and express carrier.

1913–1997 Founder of TNT

What they did and why it matters

Thomas built a national freight business from a single truck by linking road, rail, and sea services, and TNT's name later spread worldwide through its express parcel network. The company took the Thomas Nationwide Transport name in 1958, listed in 1962, and expanded into integrated transport across Australia and abroad. TNT Express later became a major European parcel carrier and was acquired by FedEx in 2016. Brands shipping to Europe or Australia may still ride on networks he started, and his model of combining modes under one carrier anticipated today's integrated logistics providers.
