Julius Rosenwald
Julius Rosenwald was an American businessman and philanthropist who became a part owner of Sears, Roebuck in 1895, later led it as president, and funded about 5,000 schools for Black children in the South.
What they did and why it matters
Rosenwald turned Sears' mail-order business into a systematic, high-volume order fulfillment operation, an early model of the modern fulfillment center. Under his leadership Sears opened a giant Chicago mail-order plant in 1906 and used color-coded tracking and assembly-line methods to fill tens of thousands of orders a day. He also backed a money-back guarantee that made buying by mail less risky. The core problems he managed, processing huge order volumes accurately, scheduling work, and handling returns, are the same ones a 3PL faces at peak season.
