Ingvar Kamprad
Ingvar Kamprad was a Swedish entrepreneur who founded IKEA as a mail-order business in 1943 and built it into the world's largest furniture retailer using flat-pack, self-assembly products.
What they did and why it matters
Kamprad showed how much logistics cost can be designed out of a product, a lesson that still drives packaging and dimensional weight decisions. IKEA's flat-pack furniture, introduced in the 1950s, ships in compact boxes that fill trucks and containers efficiently and that customers carry home and assemble themselves. Packing furniture flat cut freight, storage, damage, and assembly costs. For e-commerce brands paying dimensional weight on bulky items, designing products and cartons to ship small is the same strategy, and IKEA's approach is a common reference point.
