NFPA 13
NFPA 13 is the National Fire Protection Association Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, first issued in 1896 and updated every three years, which building and fire codes reference for sprinkler design.
What it requires
Building owners and designers must size and lay out sprinkler systems according to occupancy and, for warehouses, commodity class, packaging, storage arrangement, height and ceiling clearance. Storage chapters set designs for rack and solid-piled storage, including ceiling-only ESFR systems and in-rack sprinklers. It becomes mandatory when adopted through building and fire codes such as the IBC and IFC, and insurers often require it. The current edition is 2025, though jurisdictions adopt editions on their own schedules.
Why it matters
Sprinkler design caps what a warehouse can store and how high, so it shapes slotting and client acceptance. A building designed for cartoned Class III goods can be underprotected for exposed expanded plastics or aerosols, and raising storage heights or adding racking can exceed the system's design. For example, a fulfillment operator planning to add a mezzanine or increase rack height should have a fire protection engineer check the NFPA 13 design first, because added obstructions or taller storage can require in-rack sprinklers.
