ANSI MH16.1
ANSI MH16.1 is the Rack Manufacturers Institute specification for the design, testing and use of industrial steel storage racks, first approved as an American National Standard in 1974 and most recently revised in 2023.
What it requires
Rack manufacturers and engineers must design steel pallet racks, movable-shelf racks, rack-supported buildings and AS/RS stacker racks to its load, connection, stability and seismic requirements, and test components; cantilever racks have a separate standard, MH16.3. Users must post load capacity plaques, keep loads within rated capacities, and inspect and repair damage. The International Building Code references it for steel storage racks, making it mandatory where the IBC is adopted, and building departments often require engineered rack permits for taller installations.
Why it matters
MH16.1 is why warehouse racking needs load plaques, engineered drawings and damage inspections, not just bolts and beams. Changing beam heights, mixing components from different makers or storing heavier pallets can exceed the design and void a permit. For example, a 3PL that raises beam levels to fit a new client's taller pallets should confirm the new configuration with the rack engineer and update load plaques, since overloaded or damaged uprights are a common cause of rack collapses and OSHA citations.
