COVID-19 E-Commerce Surge
The COVID-19 E-Commerce Surge was the sudden jump in online shopping during the 2020 pandemic, when US e-commerce sales grew 32.4% to $791.7 billion as stores closed and consumers stayed home.
What happened and why it matters
The pandemic pulled years of ecommerce growth into a few months, and the fulfillment capacity, 3PL contracts, and store fulfillment programs built then still define the industry. US Census Bureau data show online sales rising 32.4% in 2020 to $791.7 billion, lifting ecommerce from 11.0% to 14.0% of retail sales, with a peak of 16.1% in the second quarter. Warehouses hired rapidly, curbside pickup spread, and many brands moved to outsourced fulfillment for the first time. When growth cooled in 2022, some operators were left with excess space, a reminder to plan capacity on sustained demand, not peaks.
