Amazon Prime Now
Amazon Prime Now was a delivery service that Amazon launched in parts of Manhattan on December 18, 2014, offering Prime members free two-hour and paid one-hour delivery of everyday items from a local hub.
What happened and why it matters
Prime Now proved that one- and two-hour delivery could work in dense cities, and it raised expectations that still push retailers toward urban micro-fulfillment and same-day service. At launch, Prime members in parts of Manhattan could get tens of thousands of everyday items free within two hours, or within one hour for $7.99, from a hub in Amazon's 34th Street building between 6 a.m. and midnight. The model relied on a small, nearby inventory and local couriers instead of national parcel networks. Operators weighing same-day service face the same trade-off today: speed requires stock close to customers, which raises storage and labor costs.
