Joseph Numero
Joseph Numero was an American businessman who, after selling his movie sound equipment company to RCA in 1938, founded the U.S. Thermo Control Company, later Thermo King, with inventor Frederick McKinley Jones.
What they did and why it matters
Numero turned Jones's truck refrigeration unit into a business, creating the company whose equipment made long-distance refrigerated trucking routine. A Minneapolis entrepreneur, he ran Cinema Supplies, where Jones worked on sound equipment. After a golfing friend lost a truckload of poultry to summer heat, Numero pushed for a reliable truck cooling unit, and he and Jones formed the U.S. Thermo Control Company, later Thermo King. In 1991, after both men had died, they were awarded the National Medal of Technology. Brands shipping food, supplements, or medicines in reefer trailers rely on the industry his company started.
